About
Scale the Summit are an instrumental progressive metal band who ditched the singer idea early. When Chris Letchford and Travis Levrier wrote their first song in Los Angeles, it already sounded finished without vocals, so that was that. The band started out in Houston, and Letchford calls their sound "adventure metal", a label that stuck from how listeners described it. After self releasing debut album Monument, they signed to Prosthetic Records and made Carving Desert Canyons. Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater heard it and invited them on the 2009 Progressive Nation tour. Albums like The Collective, The Migration and V followed, along with a lot of touring and some serious lineup shuffling. These days it's Letchford with bassist Kilian Duarte and drummer Charlie Engen. They release music independently now, and their seventh album, Subjects, landed on PopMatters' list of the best progressive metal albums of 2021.
