About
Schammasch take their name from Šamaš, the ancient Mesopotamian sun god, which tells you something about the kind of conceptual weight this Basel outfit brings to black metal. Since forming in 2009 they have pushed well beyond genre basics, folding in avant garde structures and dark ambient textures to build something genuinely hard to pin down. Their six studio albums span a restless creative arc, from the raw debut Sic Lvceat Lvx through the sprawling triple disc Triangle to the brooding Hearts of No Light. Most of that catalogue landed on Prosthetic Records. Their latest full length, The Maldoror Chants: Old Ocean, arrived in 2024 and continues a thread of conceptually ambitious work tied to the writings of the 19th century surrealist provocateur Comte de Lautréamont. Two members also played in the symphonic black metal act Atritas, though Schammasch is clearly where the more adventurous vision lives.
