About
Schwarz Stein are a Tokyo based electronic darkwave duo whose name, pseudo German for 'Black Stone', was actually given to them by Mana, the ex Malice Mizer guitarist who signed them to his label Midi:Nette back in 2002. Before that, vocalist Kaya and keyboardist/programmer Hora were recording under the alias Rudolf Steiner. Their early run produced two studio albums, New Vogue Children and Artificial Hallucination, before creative differences split the pair in 2004. The reunion story is just as interesting: after a one off anniversary show in 2011 and a proper regrouping announced in 2014, they kept releasing music well into the 2020s. Their sound sits at the intersection of visual kei theatrics, industrial textures and gothic electronics, with Kaya's dramatic vocals draped over Hora's dense, atmospheric programming. Their 2024 album DEMIGOD shows the duo still very much active and not running out of ideas.
