About
Scorn started as a sharp left turn from grindcore. Mick Harris and Nic Bullen, both ex Napalm Death, formed the Birmingham project in 1991 and used it to explore something far heavier in a different way, building dense, slow moving walls of bass and minimalist beats that drew comparisons to dub and trip hop. Harris has always been clear it was no accident: he saw it as a natural progression for someone who loves experimenting with sound. After Bullen left in 1995, the project became entirely Harris's, and his deep bass driven downtempo style earned him a reputation as one of the early originators of dubstep. Scorn ran through several phases and labels, from Earache Records through Hymen and Ohm Resistance, picking up collaborators like Autechre, Coil, Bill Laswell and Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods along the way. The 2021 album The Only Place featured a track with Kool Keith, a pairing that made perfect sense given Scorn's long flirtation with rap features. Harris officially called the project dead again in late 2022, describing the final revival as a mistake, leaving behind a catalog that remains genuinely influential in electronic and bass music circles.
