Scritti Politti started out in late 1970s Leeds as a post punk act steeped in leftist politics, with song titles dropping names like Derrida and Bakunin. Their DIY debut single 'Skank Bloc Bologna' got John Peel on board, and a deal with Rough Trade followed. But frontman and sole constant member Green Gartside had a dramatic change of heart after a health collapse in 1980, spending months in south Wales listening to Chic, Aretha Franklin and the Jacksons. He came back convinced that making genuinely great pop music was not a sell out. The reinvention paid off spectacularly. Cupid & Psyche 85 is their landmark record, landing three UK Top 20 hits including 'Wood Beez' and 'Absolute', while 'Perfect Way' cracked the US Top 20. The follow up Provision hit the UK Top 10 and gave them 'Oh Patti'. Gartside has kept the Scritti Politti name going largely as a solo project ever since, with remastered versions of the classic tracks resurfacing in recent years.
