Şebnem Ferah spent the early part of her career fronting Volvox, an all female hard rock band she co founded in Istanbul in the late 1980s. When the band dissolved in 1994, she pivoted to a solo path that would make her one of the most distinctive voices in Turkish rock. Her 1996 debut album Kadın landed as something of a landmark, blending hard rock and ballads at a time when Turkish pop and traditional music dominated the industry. It produced four hit singles and opened the door to arena shows across the country. Over the albums that followed, Şebnem steadily pushed her sound heavier and rawer. Artık Kısa Cümleler Kuruyorum leaned on a darker rock tone, Can Kırıkları in 2005 was her most distortion heavy record yet, and her collaboration with Finnish cello metal band Apocalyptica on the Perdeler title track showed just how far she was willing to go. Her most recent studio album, Parmak İzi, came out in 2018. Fans also know her as the voice of Ariel in the Turkish dubbing of The Little Mermaid.
