Few songs have planted themselves in the cultural consciousness quite like "Closing Time", and Semisonic are the Minneapolis trio responsible for it. Dan Wilson, John Munson, and Jacob Slichter built their biggest U.S. hit around a deceptively simple bar closing anthem that Wilson has said was actually about the birth of his first child. That kind of depth beneath a catchy surface is pretty much the Semisonic signature across their catalog of alternative rock and power pop. While "Closing Time" dominated American radio in 1998, the band found a different kind of success in the UK with "Secret Smile", which peaked at number 12 on the UK Singles Chart. Their third album, All About Chemistry, kept them touring overseas even as it underperformed at home. After a long break, they returned with the You're Not Alone EP in 2020 and then released the full album Little Bit of Sun in November 2023, featuring collaborators like Jason Isbell and co writer Lori McKenna.
