About
Sergeant builds songs the way an editor builds a strange film: cutting up sounds, pasting them back together and letting the seams show. The trio is made up of filmmaker and composer Benjamin Cools, actor Ferre Marnef, who sings in a searching, wandering way, and Geraldine Vanspauwen. Their music sits somewhere between the angular bite of post punk, the relentless drive of krautrock and a restless pop energy. The sound is busy and deliberately off balance, with broken rhythms, clashing textures, shrieking flutes, warped bells and dubby basslines. Think of The Avalanches throwing a party with pagan whistles, or Micachu & The Shapes skipping alongside Robert Wyatt. Live, the songs get pushed even further, turning feverish and getting rearranged into something wilder than the recorded versions.
