About
Also known as: Sean Kuti
Seun Kuti carries one of music's weightiest legacies with remarkable ease. The youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, he took over his father's legendary band Egypt 80 after Fela's death in 1997, and has been steering that ship ever since. Their debut together, Many Things, dropped in 2008, and the records kept coming: From Africa With Fury: Rise, Black Times, which scored a Grammy nomination in the World Music category, and most recently Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head), released in 2024 on Record Kicks. Seun's afrobeat is unapologetically political. He was out in the streets during the Occupy Nigeria protests in 2012, revived his father's Movement of the People political party in 2020, and signed the Artists Against Apartheid open letter in 2023. Collaborators have included Calle 13, Jidenna, and Nneka, and Time magazine named him one of its 100 Most Influential People in 2019.
