Shelea shot onto people's radar in 2012 when a YouTube video of her singing a Whitney Houston medley went viral shortly after Houston's death. That visibility earned her an invitation to the White House to perform for the Obamas at the Gershwin Prize presentation, and a Whitney Houston tribute at the Grammy Museum followed. Long before any of that, she had already been working with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and her lead vocal on Take 6's "Someone to Watch Over Me" landed a Grammy nomination in 2008. She has Stevie Wonder as a mentor and Quincy Jones as a champion, which tells you something about the calibre of company she keeps. Her 2014 single "I'll Never Let You Go" reached number 23 on Billboard's Adult R&B chart, and her 2019 album Pretty World was a full Bergman songbook tribute featuring both Wonder and saxophonist Kirk Whalum. Jones then produced a PBS concert special built entirely around her. She also took on the acting role of gospel legend Dorinda Clark Cole in the 2020 Lifetime biopic The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel.
