About
A protégé of Ravi Shankar and widely regarded as a worthy successor to that lineage, Shubhendra Rao is one of the most respected sitar players working today. He spent years learning directly under Shankar in the traditional guru shishya way, practicing up to twelve hours a day, and the depth of that training shows. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Center, and the Dover Lane Music Conference, among many other major venues and festivals across five continents. What sets Rao apart is his appetite for genuine collaboration. He has worked alongside musicians from Iranian classical, Vietnamese jazz, and Chinese pipa traditions, and he regularly creates and performs with his wife, cellist Saskia Rao de Haas. Together they have composed pieces for dance productions, NDTV's Independence Day tribute, and works like "The Red Flower", a musical dialogue inspired by the famous conversation between Tagore and Einstein.
