Few performers in the Netherlands have racked up as many musical theatre awards as Simone Kleinsma, a singer and actress from Amsterdam who has been working almost without interruption since the late 1970s. She built her reputation through long runs in Dutch theatre, then moved into major international musicals produced by Stage Entertainment, taking on roles like Roxie Hart in Chicago, Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard and Donna in Mamma Mia!. That last performance won her one of her many John Kraaijkamp Musical Awards, and in 2021 the Dutch public voted her the best musical performer of all time. Beyond the stage, she is widely known to Dutch TV audiences from the long running comedy series Kees and Co, in which she played the lead role, and she has hosted several television programmes. Her show Klassiekers met Kleinsma has been running on Omroep Max since 2021. In 2023, to mark her 65th birthday and 46 years in the industry, she received a musical written specifically for her, De Hospita, which played in Dutch theatres through to the end of 2024.
