Few bands captured the sound of the 1980s quite like Simple Minds. The Glasgow outfit built their reputation on a string of albums that pushed through post punk and new wave into something far grander, and New Gold Dream from 1982 was the moment it all clicked into place, cracking the UK top ten and landing them on the Billboard 200 for the first time. Then came "Don't You (Forget About Me)", their contribution to The Breakfast Club soundtrack, which shot to number one in the US and turned them into a genuinely global act. At their commercial peak, Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill were unstoppable, racking up UK number ones with Once Upon a Time and Street Fighting Years, and piling up hits like "Alive and Kicking", "Belfast Child" and "Sanctify Yourself". More than 60 million albums sold worldwide puts the scale of that success into perspective. The core duo of Kerr and Burchill never really stopped, returning to the charts with Graffiti Soul in 2009 and continuing to release new material well into the 2010s and 2020s.
