About
Sjoerd van Eijck is a Dutch pianist and composer who brought together German cellist Jörg Brinkmann and Norwegian drummer Jarle Vespestad after a Carte Blanche concert at Paradox in Tilburg sparked an immediate musical connection between the three. That meeting in 2019 grew into a full trio, and the album Pegasus followed as a result of their continued collaboration. The music on Pegasus is largely built from Van Eijck's own compositions, with astronomy and the imagination of the cosmos as guiding inspiration. The unusual combination of piano, cello and drums pushes the trio's sound into territory that sits somewhere between jazz, chamber music and contemporary improvisation. Classical textures surface regularly, yet the openness and spontaneity that define jazz stay at the centre of everything they do.
