About

Also known as: Skunk Anansi

Skunk Anansie took their name from Akan folk tales about Anansi the spider man of Ghana, then threw the word "Skunk" in front to make it nastier. That attitude sums up the London band pretty well: harder and rawer than the Britpop crowd dominating the mid 1990s, they carved out their own corner of Britrock with Skin's ferocious vocals, a guitar heavy sound, and singles like "Weak", "Hedonism" and "Selling Jesus". They headlined Glastonbury in 1999 and spent the decade touring alongside U2, Aerosmith, Rammstein and Muse, among others. After splitting in 2001 and a run of solo projects from each member, they reformed in 2009 and picked up almost exactly where they left off. The comeback compilation Smashes and Trashes included three new tracks, and their fifth album Wonderlustre hit number one in Italy in 2010 and placed in the top ten across much of Europe. By 2025 they were up to seven studio albums in total, a run that confirms they never really belonged to any single era.
