Philly rapper Slayr built his buzz the unconventional way, starting on Discord before a song called "Fourth Gear Cypher" went viral in 2021 and set things in motion. His third mixtape Gaia, dropping in 2023, drew inspiration from Pi'erre Bourne and Kanye West, and he's pointed to it as a turning point for his sound. The bigger leap came with Half Blood, which landed him millions of YouTube views, a deal with Columbia Records, and a Pitchfork review of its deluxe reissue that called his approach "maximalist, crowd pleasing rage rap that prioritizes craft over feeling." The Fader named him one of the 32 coolest artists of 2026, and he earned a spot in the XXL Freshman class the same year. Whether or not rage rap ever ends up on a Target playlist, Slayr is clearly making the genre a lot harder to ignore.
