About
Few bands have built a legend out of a single hour long song, but Sleep managed exactly that. The San Jose trio spent the mid 1990s crafting Dopesmoker, one continuous doom metal behemoth that their label London Records refused to release on the grounds it was unmarketable. The standoff broke the band up, but the album eventually came out in its original form in 2003 and is now considered a stoner and doom metal classic alongside their 1992 record Sleep's Holy Mountain, which is widely credited with shaping the entire stoner metal genre. After the split, guitarist Matt Pike went on to form High on Fire while Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Hakius started Om. Sleep reformed in 2009 with Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder stepping in for Hakius, and then in 2018 surprised everyone by dropping The Sciences on April 20, their first album in nearly two decades, through Third Man Records. Critics loved it, and the comeback felt fully earned.
