Slow Leaves is the project of Grant Davidson, a songwriter from Winnipeg, Canada who won the Western Canadian Music Award for Songwriter of the Year. His sound pulls from fingerpicking folk traditions while wandering freely into psych rock and contemporary territory that resists easy genre labels. Themes of love, loss, solitude, memory and time run through his work, something he summed up himself by saying he writes not sad songs but lonely ones. By his sixth album of new material, The Ruins of Things Unfinished, Davidson was reflecting on ambition and a life devoted to art and family. His own liner notes describe a career built from what he considers personal failure, and an ambition that has quietly shifted toward intimacy over grandeur. The album In Solitude, For Company collected earlier work and helped introduce his writing to wider audiences. Classic Rock Magazine praised his ability to find soulful melodies for his poetry, and Atwood Magazine called his sound a glittering golden folk dream.
