About
SML is a five piece band from Los Angeles that treats jazz as raw material to be rebuilt. Bassist Anna Butterss, keyboardist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist and drummer Booker Stardrum and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann play live instruments but run them through electronic effects and digital sampling, so the music sits somewhere between a jam session and a studio experiment. The groove comes first. Instead of long showy solos, they lean on hypnotic repetition that slowly pulls you further in. Their debut album was Small Medium Large, and later came How You Been. Pitchfork described their approach as a fresh chapter for jazz, and they have played major festivals around the world.
