Snow Patrol have one of those careers that nearly didn't happen: after two critically praised but commercially ignored indie albums on Jeepster Records, the band was dropped, broke, and writing songs in a period Gary Lightbody called simply "miserable". What came out of that stretch was "Run", which became their breakthrough single after signing to Polydor. Their 2003 major label debut Final Straw went five times platinum in the UK, and the follow up Eyes Open topped the UK Albums Chart and became the best selling British record of 2006. Its single "Chasing Cars" was reported in 2019 to be the most played song of the 21st century on UK radio. Formed in Dundee in 1994 and now a trio of Gary Lightbody, Nathan Connolly and Johnny McDaid, Snow Patrol have kept releasing records at their own pace. Final Straw, Eyes Open and A Hundred Million Suns have shifted ten million copies combined worldwide. Their eighth album, The Forest Is the Path, arrived in 2024, showing no sign of the band running out of road.
