Soft Play, the duo of Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent out of Royal Tunbridge Wells, spent about a decade recording and touring as Slaves before a name change in December 2022 prompted a public apology and a fresh start. Their punk rock sound, raw and abrasive by design, landed them a Mercury Prize nomination for their 2015 debut Are You Satisfied?, which hit number 8 on the UK Albums Chart and has since gone Silver. Their second album Take Control went even further, reaching number 6, and had Beastie Boys legend Mike D in the producer's chair and on the track "Consume or Be Consumed". Their third album Acts of Fear and Love kept the momentum going in 2018, and after years under the Slaves name they fully stepped into the Soft Play era with Heavy Jelly in 2024, their first album under the new identity. The band have always worn their influences loudly, garage rock and hardcore punk colliding with post punk energy, and that hasn't changed a bit.
