Solange Knowles has always been her own thing, even if lazy comparisons to her sister Beyoncé have followed her around. Her second album, Sol Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, was a deliberate pivot away from her pop debut toward warm, Motown soaked sounds of the 1960s and 70s, landing in the top ten of the Billboard 200 and turning real heads critically. She kept that restless, genre hopping energy going with the 1980s pop and R&B flavored EP True in 2012, released on Terrible Records through her own Saint Records imprint. Then came A Seat at the Table in 2016, a genuinely stunning left turn that went to number one in the US and won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance with the single Cranes in the Sky. Her fourth record, When I Get Home, also cracked the top ten and earned similar praise. Beyond music, she has taken her work into performance art, appearing at venues like the Guggenheim and the Venice Art Biennale, and in 2022 she became the first African American to compose a score for the New York City Ballet.
