About
Soni Malaj is an Albanian singer, songwriter and dancer from Tropojë whose name got pulled into one of the more intriguing Eurovision controversies in recent memory. When Serbian singer Marija Šerifović won Eurovision 2007 with Molitva, speculation spread that the song bore more than a passing resemblance to Malaj's own track Ndarja. She has since remained a fixture in Albanian pop, releasing five studio albums between 2002 and 2010, ranging from ballads to pop, and picking up wins at Top Fest along the way. Beyond recording, Malaj has built a serious profile on Albanian television, serving as a judge on the second, third and sixth seasons of X Factor Albania. She also made a run at representing Albania at Eurovision 2019, finishing fifth at Festivali i Këngës with the song Më e fortë. In 2021 she was back in the mix at Kënga Magjike, the long running competition where she had earlier placed second alongside Flori Mumajesi.
