Soul Asylum built their reputation the hard way, grinding through Minneapolis venues in the 1980s with a sound one early critic memorably described as 'some unholy mix of Kiss and Hank Williams thrown under the wheels of a runaway train.' That frenetic blend of punk, hardcore, and classic rock earned them a cult following long before mainstream America caught on. The band is often cited as a grunge precursor, drawing comparisons between the pre Nirvana Minneapolis scene and what was brewing in Seattle at the same time. It all clicked commercially with the 1992 triple platinum album Grave Dancers Union, and specifically the song 'Runaway Train,' which won the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 1994. The accompanying music video, featuring photos and names of missing children, was credited with reuniting several kids with their families. Tragedy struck in 2005 when founding bassist Karl Mueller died after a cancer diagnosis. The band has kept going, releasing their thirteenth studio album Slowly But Shirley in 2024.
