Southern Avenue takes their name from a Memphis street that runs straight to Soulsville, the original home of Stax Records, and that connection turned out to be more than symbolic. Less than a year after forming in 2015, they signed with Stax Records and landed their self titled debut on the US Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart at number 6, while also hitting number 1 on the iTunes Blues Chart. Rock 103 called them the most talked about band in Memphis, which is a serious claim in a city that serious about music. The band grew out of guitarist Ori Naftaly's move from Israel to Memphis, where he eventually teamed up with vocalist Tierinii Jackson and her drumming sister Tikyra. Their debut album features nine original songs co written by Naftaly and Tierinii, a cover of Ann Peebles' 'Slipped, Tripped and Fell In Love', and guest spots from Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars. One writer summed up their sound as gospel tinged R&B vocals over roots blues guitar and soul inspired songwriting, which feels about right.
