About
Spoegwolf made history when their 2019 album Koma put them at the number one spot on Apple Music charts in South Africa, the first Afrikaans music group to ever get there. The Paarl band blends rock with Afrikaans lyrics, and their output is relentless: they dropped two albums in 2020 (See and Wind), two EPs in 2021 (Groen and Silwer), and two more full lengths in 2022 (Droombrief and Dryf). Their earlier album Somer picked up Best Alternative Album at the Ghoema Music Awards and features "Glenda", a song referencing South African stripper turned activist and teacher Glenda Kemp. The four piece lineup of Danie du Toit, Moskou du Toit, Chris von Wielligh, and Albert van der Merwe brings together guitars, piano, bass, and even rap into a sound that sits comfortably in the Afrikaans rock space while pushing at its edges.
