Few bands defined the early 2000s rock landscape quite like Staind. The Springfield, Massachusetts quartet built their reputation on a sound that bridged nu metal and post grunge, and when Break the Cycle dropped in 2001, it became one of the year's best selling albums worldwide, moving over seven million copies globally. Its lead single "It's Been Awhile" sat at the top of both the modern and mainstream rock charts for 16 and 14 weeks respectively, which ranks among the longest joint runs in rock radio history. Albums like 14 Shades of Grey and Chapter V kept that momentum going, both debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. After things slowed down in the 2010s, with frontman Aaron Lewis stepping into a solo country career and guitarist Mike Mushok joining Saint Asonia, Staind came back swinging with Confessions of the Fallen in 2023. They have kept the energy going since, releasing tracks like "Lowest In Me", "Here And Now", and a 2024 collaboration with Dorothy on "Better Days". With 15 million albums sold worldwide, their legacy in alternative rock and post grunge is hard to argue with.
