About
Steve Coleman's alto saxophone sound sits at the center of one of jazz's most intellectually ambitious careers. The Chicago native built his concept around nested looping structures and complex polyrhythm, ideas he sharpened leading his long running ensemble Five Elements and co founding the M Base movement alongside Cassandra Wilson and Greg Osby. His research took him well beyond the rehearsal room: he traveled to Ghana to study Dagomba drum language, recorded with Afrocuba de Matanzas at the Havana Jazz Festival, and brought Five Elements to South India for exchanges with carnatic musicians. All of that cross cultural digging fed directly into the music. Coleman's discography runs deep, from early JMT releases in the mid 1980s through a string of records on Pi Recordings, with his most recent album PolyTropos released in 2024. The MacArthur Foundation gave him a Fellowship in 2014, citing his ability to refresh traditional templates while keeping the music genuinely innovative. Few saxophonists work at quite this level of compositional seriousness.
