Steve Earle built his reputation the hard way, starting out as a staff songwriter in Nashville before his 1986 debut Guitar Town announced him as something genuinely different in country music. The title track cracked the top 10, and the follow up album Copperhead Road cemented his sound, mixing folk storytelling with hard rock and Irish influences courtesy of The Pogues. The title track from that record remains his bestselling single, racking up over a million digital copies in the US alone and finding a whole new audience in the 21st century. His songs have been picked up by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, and plenty more, which tells you something about the calibre of his writing. Three Grammy wins for Best Contemporary Folk Album add to that picture, as does his induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Beyond music, he has turned up as a recurring character in The Wire and Treme, written a novel, a play, and a short story collection, and released a steady stream of records across bluegrass, Americana, country rock, and folk.
