Steve Hillage is one of those guitarists who never quite fit a single box, and that restlessness is exactly what makes him interesting. Coming up through the Canterbury scene in the late 1960s and early 70s, he played with Uriel and Khan before becoming a key part of Gong, where he contributed to the celebrated Radio Gnome trilogy. His guitar work had a psychedelic, almost cosmic quality that set him apart from most of his prog contemporaries. Going solo in the mid 70s, he recorded the album L with Todd Rundgren and Utopia in Woodstock, New York, landing a top ten UK chart hit and building a loyal live following. His records from that period, including Fish Rising and Green, remain touchstones of space rock. Later he reinvented himself entirely with System 7, moving into ambient electronic and dance music territory alongside collaborators like Alex Paterson of The Orb. His back catalogue has seen a wave of digital remasters keeping that classic material fresh for new listeners.
