About
Steve Jansen spent the formative chunk of his career behind the kit for Japan, the band he co founded with his brother David Sylvian and Mick Karn in Catford. Japan evolved from scrappy glam rock into something sleeker and more atmospheric, picking up the New Romantic label along the way despite the band's own resistance to it. Their run on Virgin Records, capped by Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum, ended in late 1982 amid personal and creative fallout, just as they were hitting genuine commercial stride. Jansen has stayed busy ever since, working with Barbieri as Jansen/Barbieri, fronting the Dolphin Brothers, collaborating on the Nine Horses project with Sylvian and Burnt Friedman, and releasing solo records including Slope in 2007 and Tender Extinction in 2016. His project Exit North, formed with Swedish musicians including Thomas Feiner, released its second album Anyway Still in 2023. Photography has been a serious parallel pursuit too, resulting in the 2015 book Through a Quiet Window.
