About
Richard Barbieri has been one of the more quietly indispensable figures in art rock for decades, moving between bands and projects with a consistency that few musicians manage. He made his name as the keyboard player in Japan, the British new wave act whose reputation grew slowly before their fifth album Tin Drum became their artistic and commercial peak. Barbieri was central to shaping that record alongside songwriter David Sylvian, and his touchstones at the time were Brian Eno and the French composer Erik Satie. After Japan dissolved he kept busy with a string of collaborations, most notably with fellow Japan member Steve Jansen, including the Dolphin Brothers project and a run of albums under their own names. In 1993 he joined Porcupine Tree, where he became the longest serving member besides founder Steven Wilson. The band built steadily toward progressive metal, picking up Grammy nominations along the way for albums like Fear of a Blank Planet. Porcupine Tree reunited in 2021, with Barbieri still in the fold.
