About

Also known as: Highway Star

Stiff Little Fingers came out of Belfast in 1977, right in the thick of the Troubles, and turned that lived experience into some of the most urgent punk rock of the era. They started out as a covers band called Highway Star, doing Deep Purple and the like, before discovering punk and reinventing themselves entirely. Their debut single "Suspect Device" was released on their own Rigid Digits label, caught the ear of John Peel, and sold over 30,000 copies. Their album Inflammable Material, put out with Rough Trade, became the first independent LP to crack the UK top 20. Frontman Jake Burns is the only constant across every lineup, and the band has had its share of comings and goings over the decades. Original bassist Ali McMordie returned in 2006 after Bruce Foxton's fifteen year stint ended. Through all the changes they kept at it, releasing their tenth studio album No Going Back in 2014. Their sound sits somewhere between raw punk energy and muscular power pop, and their early songs about growing up amid sectarian conflict still hit differently to this day.
