Rock This Town, one of the songs the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame credits with shaping rock and roll, came from a band that smuggled 1950s Sun Records swagger into a punk era that didn't see them coming. Stray Cats, the three piece from Massapequa, New York built around Brian Setzer's guitar, Lee Rocker's stand up bass and Slim Jim Phantom's drums, relocated to the UK around 1980 and quickly had members of the Rolling Stones, the Who and Led Zeppelin showing up to their gigs. Producer Dave Edmunds caught one of those shows and took them into the studio, resulting in a debut that spawned three UK hits in a single year. Back in the US, the EMI compilation Built for Speed went platinum and sat at number two on the Billboard charts for fifteen weeks, and Rant N' Rave delivered the top ten hit (She's) Sexy + 17. The band split after 1984, reunited several times, and kept pulling from the same deep well of rockabilly and roots rock that made them matter in the first place. Setzer later said breaking up at the peak of their success was, in his own words, silly.
