About
Stroke 9 built their reputation the slow way, gigging wherever they could around Marin County, California, and putting out independent releases before landing a deal with Universal Records. Their 1999 album Nasty Little Thoughts went Gold and produced two rock radio staples: "Little Black Backpack" and "Letters". The band even turned up in the film EDtv as part of the album's push, and their follow up single "Kick Some Ass" ended up soundtracking a memorable montage in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. After parting ways with Universal in 2003, Stroke 9 kept moving on their own terms, releasing music independently and through Rock Ridge Records. They put out a new album, Calafrio, in early 2020, then spent the next few years dropping a string of singles, one of which was written specifically for the film Losers of Eden. In 2023 they packaged eleven of those singles into the compilation Calafuego, a tidy summary of a band that never really stopped working.
