Sturgill Simpson makes country music that refuses to stay in its lane. Rooted in outlaw country and frequently compared to Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, the Kentucky born singer songwriter built his reputation on raw, independently released records before landing at Atlantic Records for 2016's A Sailor's Guide to Earth, which won him Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards and scored a nomination for Album of the Year. His second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, was made in five and a half days for roughly four thousand dollars and still pulled a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. He has never been content to settle. His 2019 release Sound & Fury pushed into rock territory and earned a Grammy nod for Best Rock Album. Then came the Cuttin' Grass volumes, bluegrass reinterpretations of songs from across his catalog, marking his return to independent music. He later fulfilled a self imposed limit of five solo studio albums by launching the alter ego Johnny Blue Skies, under which he has continued releasing new work.
