About
Sunburst carved out a genuinely unique corner of African music by blending Afro rock, Zamrock, and Kitoto into something that felt both rootsy and electric. Formed in 1970 by Zairean guitarist Hembi Flory Kongo, the band built momentum fast, picking up national attention after a radio session in 1973 and winning a band competition in Dar Es Salaam shortly after. They also recorded singles in Kenya, showing a reach that went well beyond their home base. One of their most notable members was Eric Allandale, a veteran of The Foundations and the New Orleans Knights, which gives you a sense of the international flavour the band carried. They were recording their album in 1976, it came out in 1977, and around that same time the band split. Decades later, in 2016, Strut Records gave their story a proper document with Ave Africa, The Complete Recordings 1973 to 1976, a release that cemented their place in African music history.
