Few bands have pushed rock music to such extremes as Swans. Formed in New York in 1981 by Michael Gira, they came out of the no wave scene with a sound critics described as "aggressive beyond words": slow grinding riffs, crushing drums and lyrics inspired by Jean Genet and the Marquis de Sade. When singer and keyboardist Jarboe joined in 1986, something shifted, and melody started creeping into the brutalism. The band dissolved in 1997, but Gira brought Swans back in 2010 and spent the next several years releasing some of the most ambitious work of their career, including the sprawling double albums The Seer and To Be Kind. Since 2019, Gira has kept Swans going as a revolving collective of contributors rather than a fixed lineup. All of their records since 1990 have come out on Young God Records, Gira's own label. The most recent album, Birthing, arrived in 2025, proving that after more than four decades, Swans are still very much a living, restless thing.
