About
Also known as: SOL, Taekwon, Taeyang, 太阳, 동영배, 태양
Taeyang, which means "sun", is the R&B voice of BigBang who stepped out on his own in 2008 with the EP Hot. It won Best R&B & Soul Album at the Korean Music Awards, even though he later admitted he hadn't written any of the songs and promised to change that. He moved away from the hip hop of his group and made R&B his main focus. His first full album, Solar, hit the top of the Gaon Album Chart in 2010. The big breakthrough came with Rise in 2014. It reached number 112 on the US Billboard 200, the highest spot for an album by a Korean soloist at that time, and its lead single "Eyes, Nose, Lips" topped the Billboard K pop Hot 100. The song swept Song of the Year at the MAMA Awards, Melon Music Awards and Golden Disc Awards. His 2017 album White Night then went to number one on the World Digital Albums chart for two weeks. Critics regularly rank him among the best vocalists in South Korea.
