Few bands have left as deep a mark on electronic music as Tangerine Dream. Founded in Berlin in 1967 by Edgar Froese, the group became central to the kosmische Musik scene and helped shape what we now call new age, ambient, and electronic dance music. Their mid 1970s Virgin Records albums Phaedra and Rubycon were genuine commercial breakthroughs, with Phaedra cracking the UK top 20, and they were among the first albums to put sequencers front and centre in a pop context. Over more than five decades the lineup shifted constantly, though Froese steered the ship until his death in 2015. Since then Thorsten Quaeschning, Froese's chosen successor, has led the group alongside violinist Hoshiko Yamane and Paul Frick. Their recorded output is staggering, running to well over a hundred albums and more than 60 film scores, including work on the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack. More recently they released the studio album Raum in early 2022, building on ideas introduced on their EP Probe 6 8.
