Few Turkish pop artists have come close to Tarkan's commercial dominance. Born Tarkan Tevetoğlu in Alzey, Germany, he has been the undisputed king of Turkish pop since his debut in 1992, consistently outselling every other Turkish pop act and earning the nickname 'megastar' back home. His 1999 smash Şımarık broke him internationally and landed him a World Music Award, and CNN once tagged him as the 'Turkish Elvis.' In Russia he remains the best selling non Russian pop artist. His image has always been part of the package: playful, double edged lyrics, a reputation as a sexy dancer and a sensitive heartthrob at the same time. Fans have spread across Europe, Latin America, Australia and Russia, with fan clubs running in more than fifteen languages online. His 1997 album Ölürüm Sana sold 4.5 million copies in Turkey alone, and a later release, Beni Çok Sev, kept him active well into the 2010s.
