Tenacious D is Jack Black and Kyle Gass, a comedy rock duo from Los Angeles who turned acoustic guitar and theatrical vocals into one of rock's most absurdly entertaining acts. Their 2001 self titled debut, with Dave Grohl on drums, introduced the world to their mix of vulgar humor and genuine musicianship, and the single 'Tribute' quickly took on a life of its own, earning cult status particularly in the UK, Sweden and Australia. Critics coined the term 'mock rock' for their style, which blends rock opera storytelling with songs about friendship, cannabis and wildly inflated self mythology. Their 2006 film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny flopped at the box office but spawned a hugely successful arena tour, including a stop at Madison Square Garden. The third album Rize of the Fenix in 2012 cheerfully poked fun at that commercial stumble. A Grammy win for their cover of 'The Last in Line' showed they could hold their own in proper heavy metal territory, and the 2018 animated series and album Post Apocalypto proved they were still finding new formats to mess around in.
