Few Australian rock bands have left a dent quite like The Angels. Formed in Adelaide in 1974 out of the acoustic Moonshine Jug and String Band, they plugged in, toughened up, and became one of the defining forces of the Australian pub rock scene. With Doc Neeson stalking the stage as lead vocalist alongside the Brewster brothers on guitar, they built a reputation for relentless, hard driving live shows that genuinely raised the bar for what audiences expected from a band. Six of their studio albums cracked the Australian top 10, including No Exit, Dark Room and Night Attack, and their catalogue influenced everyone from Guns N Roses and Pearl Jam to Cheap Trick, who became actual touring friends. Overseas they had to release records as Angel City or The Angels From Angel City to sidestep naming conflicts, a compromise the band never stopped complaining about. They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1998. After years of lineup changes, splits and competing versions of the band, the current incarnation is built around the founding Brewster brothers, John and Rick, joined by John's sons Sam on bass and Tom on drums, with Nick Norton handling lead vocals.
