About
Sydney's Beautiful Girls have been doing things their own way since 2001, staying independent while quietly racking up some serious numbers. Their roots music blends reggae, dance hall and folk inflected rock, and the last four of their five studio albums all cracked the ARIA top 20. Spooks and Dancehall Days both hit number one on the Australian Independent Chart, and the latter landed at number five on the American Billboard Reggae Albums Chart. By 2014, total album sales had reached 350,000 across touring stops in Japan, Brazil, Canada and the United States. Founder Mat McHugh has been the constant creative force, handling vocals, guitar, bass, melodica and production duties, while original members Clay MacDonald and Mitchell Connelly went on to work with Angus and Julia Stone and their own various projects. The single "I Thought About You" gave The Beautiful Girls their biggest chart moment on the ARIA Singles Chart, and The Sydney Morning Herald noted how the band's sound had grown punchier and more politically pointed with the Ziggurats album.
