Few bands have worn their influences as proudly as The Black Crowes. The Atlanta outfit built their sound on 1970s blues rock, Southern rock and soul, and it paid off immediately: their 1990 debut Shake Your Money Maker sold over five million copies, with their cover of Otis Redding's Hard to Handle and the acoustic ballad She Talks to Angels both cracking the Billboard Hot 100 top 30. Two years later, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, with all four of its singles topping the Album Rock Tracks chart. Over more than three decades they racked up ten studio albums and shifted over 30 million records worldwide. The road was bumpy, with multiple hiatuses, lineup shuffles and a breakup in 2015, but brothers Chris and Rich Robinson have always been the constant. They reformed in 2019 for the 30th anniversary of Shake Your Money Maker, and their ninth studio album Happiness Bastards, released in 2024, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. Rolling Stone readers once voted them Best New American Band, and it still fits.
