The Bobby Lees got their name from a ghost. Vocalist and guitarist Sam Quartin had a hallucination in which she believed she saw a spirit called Bobby Lee, and that experience became the seed for both the band's identity and a song on their debut album, Beauty Pageant, released in 2018. That record opened doors fast, landing them support slots with The Black Lips, Shannon and the Clams, Future Islands, and the Chats, even after their gear was stolen mid tour in Tulsa and they had to borrow kit from local bands just to get through the show. Their 2020 album Skin Suit, produced by Jon Spencer, landed on the San Francisco Examiner's top ten albums of the year and earned serious praise for its raw, unrelenting energy. Bellevue followed in 2022 via Ipecac Recordings, produced by Vance Powell. After announcing a hiatus in late 2023 and calling out streaming platforms for making life impossible for mid sized bands, actor Jason Momoa stepped in and offered to fund a new record. They eventually signed with Epitaph Records and released their fourth studio album New Self in 2026.
