About
Few tribute acts can claim over 4,000 performances across four decades, but the Bootleg Beatles have made a serious career out of channelling the Fab Four. Founded in March 1980 by Andre Barreau, Neil Harrison, and David Catlin Birch after the close of the West End musical Beatlemania, the London group quickly built a reputation far beyond the tribute circuit, touring the Soviet Union early on and later the Far East, India, and Israel before cracking the US in 1984 to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Beatles' first American run. A gig in Southampton caught Oasis's ear, and the band ended up supporting them at Earls Court and Knebworth, which pulled in a whole new generation of fans and opened doors to the European festival scene. They played Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee at Buckingham Palace in 2002, headlined the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury multiple times, and in 2017 performed a specially arranged version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. George Harrison himself once told them they probably knew the chords better than he did.
