About
Three brothers from Wakefield who built a fiercely independent career on scratchy guitars and a refusal to play the major label game, The Cribs have quietly become one of British indie rock's most enduring outfits. Gary, Ryan and Ross Jarman recorded their lo fi debut in just seven days on 8 track tape, and that raw, no frills aesthetic stuck with them long enough for Q magazine to crown them the biggest cult band in the UK back in 2008. That same year they pulled off something genuinely surprising: ex Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined the band as a full member, staying until 2011. By 2017 their last four albums had all cracked the UK Top 10, and in 2023 the Evening Standard placed them at number 9 on its list of the 20 best indie rock bands of all time. They picked up the Spirit of Independence award at the Q Awards and the Outstanding Contribution to Music gong at the NME Awards in the same year. Their 2020 record Night Network, which features collaborations with Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, shows they still have plenty to say.
