About
Also known as: ザ・ダークネス
Few bands have pulled off a full comeback quite like The Darkness. The Lowestoft quartet built their name on unashamed hard rock and glam metal theatrics, and their 2003 debut Permission to Land was a phenomenon: four weeks at number one in the UK, over a million and a half copies sold, and a haul of three Brit Awards including Best Album. Singles like "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and "Growing on Me" became era defining anthems, and headlining Reading and Leeds in 2004 felt like a coronation. After a messy split in 2006 that spawned two separate side projects, they reunited in 2011 with original bassist Frankie Poullain back on board. The years since have been genuinely productive: albums including Last of Our Kind, Pinewood Smile, Easter Is Cancelled, and Motorheart have kept coming at a steady pace, showing the band are far more than a nostalgia act. Rufus Tiger Taylor, son of Queen drummer Roger Taylor, now holds down the drum stool, which feels weirdly fitting given how much Queen runs through the band's DNA.
