About
The Devil Makes Three pull from an unusually wide range of sources, blending folk, bluegrass, old time, country, blues, jazz, punk and ragtime into something that feels genuinely its own. The Santa Cruz trio of Pete Bernhard, Cooper McBean and MorganEve Swain has seven studio albums to their name, and the band has kept releasing music across more than two decades without ever landing on a major label. Their 2018 record Chains Are Broken was produced by Ted Hutt and came out on New West Records, and they have performed at festivals like Outside Lands and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Drink is a recurring theme in their lyrics, and that loose, rowdy energy carries through their live shows too. After longtime member Lucia Turino stepped back from touring in 2019, MorganEve Swain stepped in on upright bass and vocals. The new lineup recorded Spirits, the band's first album in seven years, released in early 2025 on New West Records. The thirteen track record was previewed by the title track and the single "I Love Doing Drugs".
